31st Infantry

6th Battalion, 31st Infantry

.
In 1967, the 6th Battalion 31st Infantry was formed at Ft Lewis, WA, but wore no shoulder patch while in training. Intended to join its sister battalion in the 23d Infantry Division in Vietnam, the 6th Battalion was diverted instead to the 9th Infantry Division whose shoulder patch is an olive disc with a red and blue symbol of the 9th son bearing a white disc in the center. The 6th Battalion departed Vietnam in 1970 and was inactivated at Ft Lewis. The 6th Battalion was reactivated with the 7th Infantry Division in 1975 at Ft Ord, California. In 1981, it was transferred to Ft Irwin, California and reassigned to the 177th Armored Brigade supporting the National Training Center. Its patch is blue, bordered in gold with a gold wedge superimposed with a red spearpoint. The 6th Battalion was inactivated at Ft Irwin in 1988.
